Okay, so I started a new story.
Prologue
The moon peeped out from behind a gray storm cloud, casting a weak light on the happenings below.
“They didn’t want to give her up,” the big man with the bushy beard rumbled, standing partly still in shadow.
“Well, there’s nothing they can do about it now,” the stern lady with gray hair said. “They wont have the faintest idea where their darling Reyna disappeared to overnight. Serves them right!”
“Of course they’ll know where she went,” the man cut in sharply. “Owen isn’t stupid.”
“I’m sure you still hold some attachments to that brother of yours,” the woman said slyly. “But don’t regret your actions. The service you have done the King tonight will not be forgotten.” Her voice became more business like. “Was Reyna gifted in Athletics or Magic?” there was a slight pause.
“Athletics,” the man said, his voice blank.
“She’ll need to be nursed,” the lady took the bundle from the mans arms. “Goodbye, then.” she walked briskly away. The man silently disappeared into the shadows, and the storm began.
Chapter One
15 years later
Reyna lazily swished her foot through the water. The sky just showed the faintest hints of dawn, everything was still and quiet. She snuck here whenever she could, the little pond with its floating lilies and inquisitive tad poles calmed her.
‘I should probably get back,’ Reyna thought reluctantly. The academy was about a mile away, and swords practice started when the sun rose. Putting down the little rabbit she was holding, she got slid off the rock and stretched.
Memories flashed through her head as she jogged towards the forbidding gray building. A lonely little girl of ten, tired of the harshness and grueling work in the academy, running running away. She had stopped for breath by a sweet little pond, and fallen asleep crying. When she awoke she was surrounded by creatures, chirping birds and tiny frogs and sniffing mice. That day she had discovered something incredible, animals would come to her when she was feeling bad and comfort her. After staying there for a day, she had decided that at least at the academy she could eat, and so went back. But that little pond became her thinking place, her refuge.
“Reyna!” a voice cut through the early morning as Reyna went to open the looming front door.
“What?” Reyna asked curiously as a guard came running around the corner.
“Where have you been?” he asked sternly.
“Just went for a jog,” Reyna said innocently.
“We’ve been looking everywhere for you,” the guard said. “The head trainer wants to see you.”
“Why?” Reyna asked, panic rising. “Did I do something wrong?” the guard didn’t answer, only opened the door and ushered her in. The head trainer didn’t actually train people, he just ran the whole academy. So barely anyone ever saw him. What could he possibly want with her? His office was exactly in the middle of the building, between the athletic sector and the magic sector. Students from both gave her sympathetic looks as they passed. Reyna tried to remember seeing anyone go in here. Yes, there had been a few. But the thing was, had they come out?
The door opened before the guard could knock. “Ah, Reyna,” a smiling woman said, motioning for the guard to leave. “Won’t you please come in? The head trainer will be with you in just a few moments.”
Despite all her misgivings, Reyna couldn’t help but feel curious as she stepped inside. Gasping with surprise, she looked around herself with awe. The head trainers office was unlike she had ever seen before. The floor was wooden, with a colorful rug with a fancy design on it. The walls were wallpapered, with grand looking paintings. There was a large mahogany desk, and several chairs. Everything had plush velvet cushions. Anything Reyna had known had been made by either steel or metal. Everything in the academy was bland and boring, except for this one room.
“Good morning Reyna,” a man entered the room. He was small, with mouse brown hair and fancy clothes. Pinned proudly to his chest was both the medal of athletics and wizardry.
“Good morning,” Reyna replied slowly.
“I’m sure you must be wondering why you are here,” the head trainer said. “For fifteen years you have been training. You have showed infinite promise in athletics, and so today I decided you are ready to take The Test.”
“The test?” Reyna asked.
“To see if you are ready to join the army, and serve the King.” he smiled briefly. “Not everyone is. We have to weed out the weak.” Reyna found herself gulping for words. What kind of test would she be entering? “If you will follow me,” he opened another door and Reyna went through it into a small room. It was completely bare, walls and floors made of steel. Two muscular guards stood to attention, and the head trainer motioned to them. They went to one wall and took hold of a huge handle that was barely seeable. By sheer strength they pulled back the steel wall, and Reyna entered the room beyond. She heard the thud of the wall being pushed back into place, and nervously she looked around.
The room was nothing like what she had expected it to be. True, there were no doors or windows, but what bad things could possibly happen in a room that’s walls were simply lined with books?
All of a sudden, the walls started to move forward. Reyna’s heart raced. Any one of the many books could be her route to freedom. But dare she take the risk? Quickly, Reyna reached out and brushed her fingertips over the books spines. Tingling, coldness, pain, and hotness raced up her arm. Trembling, Reyna pulled one out. She had to do this now or never, the walls were only a few feet away. She took a deep breath, opened the book at random, and looked.
What happens is whatever word she sees in the book she immediately goes there. There are SO many things I could do next, I cant decide what to do. What should I do???
