Okay, so this is Kelia. I wrote this yesterday. I wrote it by hand, so thats why there's so many breaks. Everything feels so much longer by hand!
Chapter One
The dragon was huge. Its arched neck looked like a mountain ridge, the snow startlingly blue. But what mountain ended in a fearsome head, gaping with teeth?
“No way, am I riding that,” I stopped short, ignoring Rin tugging on my arm.
“Come on,” he urged. “You’ll love it.” It wasn’t that I hadn’t seen Rin riding dragons around the city - I was well accustomed to the sight - but now that it was so close and so big….
“Uh-uh.” I folded my arms and almost started walking away, but something about the dragon made me look at it. Its eyes weren’t fearsome like the rest of it, they were calm and serene, the deep blue hinting at hidden wisdom. “Do they like being ridden?” I asked suddenly.
“I don’t know,” rin shrugged. “I don’t think they mind. Though some of the younger ones can be-- temperamental. The real hotheads go live in the mountains, though most of them realize the benefits of staying with humans.”
I wasn’t really listening to him, I found myself just staring deeper and deeper into the dragons eyes. All of a sudden I saw in its eyes a lake, rippling gently. Then out of it burst a dragon - at first seeming to be made of shimmering water, then solidifying into an intense blue.
“Seraphim,” a booming voice spoke in my mind, and the image was gone.
I admit it: I was shocked. Rin must have sensed something was wrong, because didn’t argue with me to ride the dragon, like he usually would of. Instead, he let me go back to my room where I thought over the events.
‘How could that have happened?’ I thought. Humans hadn’t been able to understand dragons for thousands of years. Fortunately, they could understand our language, but they’d never been able to speak it. And I was certain that dragon had told me his name. I must have fallen asleep
puzzling over it, because the next thing I knew Rin was knocking on the door.
“Anything the matter?” he called in.
“No…well…come in,” I said indecisively. Once he was in the room I broached the subject cautiously. “Would you think I’m totally crazy if I said the dragon spoke to me?” I asked.
“Maybe not,” Rin said, smiling a little. “But it would depend on how plausible your story was.” So I told him, as matter of factedly as I could. He didn’t say anything for a while, just looked thoughtful. “I don’t know,” he said at last. “I don’t think that’s ever happened before. If I were you I would want double proof, to make sure I didn’t imagine it.”
“That’s what I was thinking,” I said. “The dragons on his rounds now?” and rin nodded. The dragons and humans worked together to make a defense system, dragons and riders flying around the city and keeping enemies at bay. There was another group of humans, who made sure no one hunted dragons. That was the exchange, and that was why Rin was used to flying
and I wasn’t. “I’ll visit him tonight, then.” I said determinedly.
The moon slipped under a cloud, and I darted from the protectors house to the dragons forest. I wanted to remain unseen if at all possible. I skirted the protectors path, and out of habit watched for hunters. They were always easy to find, as the majority were outfitted in clanking
armor and had battle horses. They still insisted on thinking there was glory in killing a dragon, which was way wrong. We had only had a treaty with them for a two hundred years!
The caves that housed the dragons were coming up, and I stepped clearly into the open. With dragon’s lightning quick reflexes, it was no use approaching from behind. I had never actually been in he caves, so I had no idea which on Seraphim was in. Nervously I peered into the darkness of one, and found twelve pairs of colorful eyes staring back at me. They were very big caves.
“Uh, do any of you know where Seraphim is?” I asked hesitantly. There was evident surprise among them, and they conferred in their strange language for a few minutes before one of them stepped out. Its nodded to the cave at its left, watching me with careful green eyes. “Thanks,” I
said and quickly left.
The next cave was much smaller, and I only found one pair of eyes gazing at me. “Seraphim,” I said questioningly and stepped forward. Seraphim regarded me cooly for a moment, and I was afraid nothing would happen. But then the voice spoke in my mind again.
“Aleandra,” the dragon said and I nodded quickly, my eyes bright. “You have come at last.”
Chapter Two
“You were expecting me?” was all I could say at the moment.
“Yes,” Seraphim said, and waited patiently as I sorted my thoughts out.
“But why me?” I asked. “Why did you speak to me and not Rin? Or anyone?”
“You have to look the dragon in the eye, for one thing,” Seraphim said.
“Riders are much too familiar with their dragons to ever really do that. Especially as you have to see the dragon as an equal.”
“Can all dragons speak to people?” I asked excitedly.
“No,” seraphim said, a bit sadly. “I am somewhat different. But that’s why I spoke to you. Dragons and humans have been separated for far too long. It is time for humans to learn our language again.”
“Wait, you cant mean…” I began to realize just what he meant. “I cant learn your language! Let alone teach it to other people!”
“But you must!” Seraphim’s voice grew agitated. “The knowledge of certain things has been held back too long! All barriers must be broken down!”
“Why?” I asked quietly. “What’s going to happen?”
“It is not my place to reveal it,” Seraphim turned away. Then more gently, “You will need to think. It is a big responsibility. And you may not think you are old enough, or wise enough, but you are. Else I would not have spoken to you. Go.” And so I went.
I think I can continue it, I have a basic idea of whats going to happen, except for right after that. I need her to have some problem or a bad guy show up, but I cant figure it out! At least I'm finally writing! :D
