EXT. A FUNERAL IN A GRAVEYARD - DAY
A large group of people clad in black are standing around a coffin. The preacher speaks but you cant hear him because of the song, Hello by Evanescence. MOM is crying into DADS shoulder. KATARINA is staring blankly. It starts to rain and Katarina walks away.
Katarina is 14, she has brown hair and green eyes. She looks sad all the time and hides within herself.
A BELL RINGS one month later.
INT. A CLASSROOM - AFTERNOON
KATARINA jumps, then begins to gather her books. Everyone around her is talking but she ignores them. You see her MOM waiting outside the door. Katarina doesn't see and walks past her.
INT. THE HALL - AFTERNOON
People stream past her. KATARINA walks to the door then remembers her MOM, turning around. Her mom is talking to a TEACHER softly.
TEACHER
Katarina's grades really have been dropping. If you could talk to her…
MOM
I'll try.
MOM walks towards KATARINA.
MOM has short brown hair and a frantic look, she is at her wits end with everything that has been happening.
INT. IN THE CAR - AFTERNOON
MOM is driving tensely, KATARINA stares out the window.
MOM
(sighs)
Katarina, I know its been a very hard time for you lately. But your school work is really suffering your teacher said. If you could just try a bit--
KATARINA
(turns abruptly)
Are any of us really trying, mom?
They pull into the parking lot, a large white building is in front of them.
MOM
We all are trying very hard, you know that Katarina.
(Impatiently)
Do you think its any easier for me than for you?
KATARINA
Mom- just- don't.
KATARINA opens the car door and gets out, slams the car door. MOM watches her enter the white building with a frustrated expression.
INT. DR. DIMOND'S OFFICE - AFTERNOON
KATARINA is slumped on a couch, Dr. Dimond is pacing in front of her. He is a short, balding man. The room is modern and white. Dr. Dimond has been talking for a while.
DR. DIMOND
…this is only our second session, and its so soon after, but I feel like we aren't making any progress. I've consulted other doctors in the business and they gave me some advice. I think what we need to do is really talk about the subject, you never talk when you're here.
KATARINA's P.O.V. she is watching Dr. Dimond's shoes throughout his whole speech, the shoes go back and forth, back and forth. Then you see her, her eyes are slowly closing. DR. DIMOND finally notices.
DR. DIMOND
Katarina? Katarina? Are you awake?
KATARINA
(Innocently, her eyes opening)
Oh I'm so sorry, Dr. Dimond. I think I missed all of that.
DR. DIMOND
(Sighing)
What I said was, I think we need to talk about what happened. Communication is a big part of therapy-
KATARINA
(Suddenly alive, leaning forward, her eyes narrowed.)
I. Don't. Want. To. Talk. About. It.
DR. DIMOND
Well what do you want? You're making no effort whatsoever to do anything.
KATARINA
(Quietly)
I just want things to go back to the way they were before.
KATARINA stares out the window.
INT. KATARINA'S ROOM - AFTERNOON
Katarina is slumped on her desk, a history book open before her. Her head is on her hands as she listens to shouting O. S.
MOM
And now on top of everything else, Katarina's going to fail ninth grade!
DAD
(quieter)
Its just a slump, she'll get through it.
MOM
You're always saying that! You're always going easy on people!
DAD
Would you rather I blamed everyone like you?
KATARINA sighs and puts her head on the table, knocking over a pile of papers. She bends to pick them up and notices a picture on the bottom of the stack.
The Phone Rings O. S and MOM answers it.
She picks it up and looks at it. It's a picture of the family a year ago, all of them smiling and happy. Katarina picks up scissors and is thinking about slicing through Shira's head but stops at the last moment. She looks at the picture sadly.
MOM knocks softly and enters. KATARINA straightens up, surprised, and hastily turns the picture so Mom cant see it.
MOM
Katarina? The neighbors just called, they're having a cousin over for a few days so they want to know if you'll be fine with baby-sitting one extra.
KATARINA
Its fine.
MOM leaves and KATARINA looks at the picture.
INT. NEIGHBORS LIVINGROOM - NIGHT
KATARINA walks into the living room and sets down her backpack next to the couch. She sits down as BOY ONE goes screaming past the door, being chased by BOY TWO who goes charging after him. Katarina zips open the backpack as KEENAN pokes his head around the door. Keenan is seven, with sandy blonde hair. He's very intelligent looking.
KEENAN
Hi, you're Rina right?
KATARINA
(Faintly annoyed)
It's Kat.
KATARINA reaches for the book in the backpack.
KEENAN
But Rina is what your sister calls you, isn't it?
KATARINA freezes, her next words difficult.
KATARINA
Called. And yes.
KATARINA looks up at him, her eyes full of restrained pain.
KATARINA (cont.)
When did you know her?
KEENAN comes in the room and perches on the edge of a big chair, his legs swinging.
KEENAN
I met her yesterday.
KATARINA nearly drops her book which is in her hand.
KATARINA
What? You couldn't have. She's dead.
KEENAN
She did say you'd say that…
KATARINA
(Astonished, skeptically)
Let me go over this. You think you met my dead sister yesterday?
KEENAN
Well it wasn't her of course, it was her ghost.
KATARINA
Her ghost? This is too crazy. You're crazy.
KATARINA gets up and goes to the door. KEENAN calls after her.
KEENAN
Don't you want to talk to her?
KATARINA
(Firmly)
No. Especially as she is a figment of your imagination.
KATARINA stalks out of the room.
INT. NEIGHBORS KITCHEN - NIGHT
KATARINA sits at the table, trying to concentrate on her book. In the background are sounds of Boy One and Boy Two fighting, but she cant concentrate because of what Keenan has just told her.
KATARINA looks up from the page, her mind is in another place. Her face is skeptical, but then it goes thoughtful. No doubt she is wondering what she would say to her sister if she had the chance.
Finally realizing that she isn't reading, KATARINA snaps her gaze back to the page. After a moment of intent staring she sighs, frustrated, and snaps the book shut.
KEENAN appears in the kitchen doorway.
KATARINA
Still think you're seeing ghosts?
KEENAN
Yup. Shira's in that chair, if you were wondering.
KEENAN points to the chair opposite from Katarina. KATARINA looks at it and shivers a little bit.
KEENAN (cont.)
She's been watching you. She really wants you to believe me, you know.
KATARINA
I'm never going to.
KEENAN
There might be a way I can prove it to you…
KATARINA
(Unnerved)
Prove it to me?
KEENAN looks at her carefully and makes a decision. He walks forward.
KEENAN
I'll have to do it. You wont believe me any other way.
KATARINA gets up from her chair, nervous at Keenan's words.
KATARINA
Wait, wait. Do what?
KEENAN simply reaches over the space between them and takes KATARINA'S hand. Abruptly the ghost of SHIRA appears. Katarina half-shrieks, putting a hand to her mouth.
KATARINA
(A little hysterically)
What did you do to me? Am I crazy too now?
KEENAN
Of course not. I'm not crazy either. Taking your hand just shows you what I see.
KATARINA is not really listening, she is staring at the ghost of Shira.
KATARINA
Are you actually there? Is this actually your ghost, Shira?
SHIRA
Yes, Rina. This is actually the ghost of me.
KATARINA stares at the ghost of Shira for a long moment, Shira stares back sadly.
Shira is seventeen with long black hair and green eyes, she is wearing stylish and a little bit punky black clothes.
Finally Katarina can speak, the shock is wearing off and she remembers what she's wanted to say for this past month.
KATARINA
(Quietly)
Why'd you do it, Shira? Why'd you have to go and kill yourself and ruin all our lives?
SHIRA
(Sadly)
Look- about that-- I'm sorry.
KATARINA
(Getting a little angry)
You'd better be. Do you have any idea how messed up my life is now?
SHIRA
(Softly)
Yes. I do. I'm here the whole time, Rina, even though you cant see me.
KATARINA is a little taken aback by this information but she continues.
KATARINA
Look, I don't know why you wanted to talk to me, but can you please explain about your death? It's just about been driving me crazy.
SHIRA
I really do want to explain, but we don't have that much time. I did want to talk to you for a reason though. Can you please give someone a message for me?
KATARINA
Why should I?
SHIRA
(Exasperated)
Because I'm your sister. And now that you have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to talk to her ghost, you wont do her a tiny little favor because you're too worked up over her death.
KATARINA
Suicide.
SHIRA winces at the word, and they stare at each other with folded arms, their faces unrelenting. Finally KATARINA gives in.
KATARINA
Fine. I'll take your message, and then you explain. But after that I never want to see your face again. Whatever your reason is, I'm sure its not good enough.
SHIRA
(Sadly)
Alright. Thanks, Rina.
KATARINA ignores her and picks up a pen and piece of paper. SHIRA disappears as Katarina lets go of KEENAN'S hand, she starts, then shrugs it off. She takes Keenan's hand again and Shira appears.
KATARINA
What's the message?
SHIRA
The message is 'They know we exist but nothing else.'
KATARINA gives SHIRA a strange look but writes it down. Shira abruptly disappears and then appears again.
KATARINA
Who do I give it to?
SHIRA
Alec Xaner. He lives in New York City.
KATARINA
What's his phone number?
SHIRA
I don't think he has a phone.
KATARINA
(Annoyed)
I'll have to go there? No way.
SHIRA
Please? It's only two hours away.
KATARINA
How would I get there?
KEENAN
I know! I live in Trenton, between here and there. When I go back on Saturday you can offer to go with me on the bus, pretending to visit someone in Trenton. Then we'll go past it to New York, call my Dad and say we had to catch a later bus, give Alec the message, then go back to Trenton.
KATARINA
(Impressed)
That actually might work. Are you always this smart?
KEENAN grins.
SHIRA
He lives on Graham street, number 76.
KATARINA writes it down, SHIRA disappears and then appears again.
SHIRA
Thank you, really. It's important.
KATARINA
Whatever.
O. S. is the sound of the front door opening and closing. BOY ONE and BOY TWO come running past the door.
NEIGHBOR DAD O. S.
I'm home!
KEENAN
You can ask my uncle tomorrow night, when you baby-sit me again.
KATARINA
Alright.
KATARINA lets go of KEENAN'S hand. SHIRA disappears.
INT. DINING ROOM - NIGHT
MOM DAD and KATARINA sit at the table eating dinner silently. Katarina looks over her shoulder jumpily, then does it a few moments later.
INT. KATARINA'S ROOM - NIGHT

Now for the funny part. Today I was completely and utterly stuck for no reason, so Anna told me to write something random. I did.
A pumpkin floats by the window, followed by a zucchini and a cucumber. KATARINA GIADA ALEC and KEENAN turn to stare at the vegetables floating by for a moment, then turn back to their conversation without giving it a second thought.
The wind changes and the vegetables start flying into the window. Everyone in the airport turns at the sound of hammering on glass, and stare at the carrots and squash as they repeatedly fly into the building.
KATARINA
Is anyone going to do anything about that? They could hurt themselves.
An airplane touches down on the runway and, as one, the vegetables swoop around and start knocking on the airplane windows. You can see the startled faces looking out of the airplane as it slows to a halt next to the building, the vegetables are still wanting to get in. Everyone inside the building is now watching this spectacle.
People start getting off the plane, the crew and passengers hurry inside to escape the vegetables, afraid they’ll start attacking. But the vegetables peacefully form a line and start filing into the airplane. Soon everyone inside the building can see the cabbage and green beans taking their seats. There is the sound of a motor starting and the plane goes back into the runway. The first large pumpkin that everyone saw is flying the airplane.
Everyone inside watches with awe as the vegetables wave goodbye and lift into the sky.
Far in the distance a group of people from the nearby vegetable farm are seen running after the plane, waving their arms in pursuit.
